‘Christmas Cheer’ program welcomes donations

The annual St. Timothy’s Christmas Cheer for Children program has begun in La Salle County, with volunteers collecting donations of toys and funds for distribution in December.

Members of the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office and other volunteers will collect donations at the Family Dollar store on North Main Street in Cotulla from 5 p.m. onwards, Thursday and Friday, December 5 and 6; and collection boxes have been placed at participating businesses throughout the county this week.

Community members are being asked to drop off new toys (not gift-wrapped) suitable for children of all ages, infant to age 18, or make monetary donations at any of the collection boxes before Monday, Dec. 16.

All toys will be distributed by sheriff’s office ‘Santa volunteers’ to homes in Cotulla, Encinal, and outlying areas immediately before Christmas. Monetary donations are used to purchase additional toys.

Last year, the project helped put gifts in the hands of at least 400 children across La Salle County.

“This project is especially close to all of our hearts,” organizer Esmeralda Gonzalez said this week. “So many of these children would not otherwise have a Christmas if it weren’t for the generous donations of all the community members who support our efforts.”

Program organizers are looking for additional volunteers to host collection boxes at their businesses.

A list of needy families with children who may receive Christmas gifts through the charitable program has been drafted by the St. Timothy’s Christmas Cheer project organizers.

Further information on the project and on ways in which to make donations is available from Esmeralda Gonzalez, Homar Olivarez and Elvira Gonzales at the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office, (830) 879-3044.
