2020 THSWPA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Stephanie Benavidez claims regional championship in 148-lb. weight class.
Local schools will be sending nine athletes to the Texas High School Womens Powerlifting Association 2020 State Championships following regional competition at Edcouch Elsa last week.
Five Pearsall lifters, one Dilley athlete and three qualifiers from Cotulla will make the trip to the Extraco Events Center in Waco on Friday, March 20 for the state competition.
Pearsall’s Alamar Garcia, Devany Reyna, Leandra Gandara, Alyssa Alva and Brittany Briseno qualified after competing at the Region V Division II 4A Meet.
Dilley’s Kristal Rodriguez and Cotulla’s Stephanie Benavidez, Jennifer Benavidez and Regina Seidel all competed at the Region V Division III Championships.
All nine will be vying for state titles in six different weight classes in Waco.
Pearsall had three athletes qualify in the 105-lb. division alone as each recorded a state qualifying total lift.
Garcia was third in the division with a total lift of 705 lbs., Reyna was seventh but had a total lift of 640 lbs. and Gandara was eighth but tallied a total lift of 625 lbs. The state qualifying total is 625 lbs. for the division.
Garcia had lifts of 280 lbs. in the squat, 145 lbs. in the bench press and 280 lbs. in the deadlift. Reyna posted lifts of 250 lbs. in the squat, 125 lbs. in the bench press and 265 lbs. in the deadlift. Gandara recorded lifts of 240 lbs. in the squat, 125 lbs. in the bench press and 260 lbs. in the deadlift.
Alva was ninth at 198 lbs. but tallied a total weight of 875 lbs. to qualify for state. Briseno was sixth at 220 lbs. but likewise recorded a state qualifying total of 900 lbs. to earn her bid.
Lifters must finish either first or second in their respective weight classes or record a state-qualifying total to advance to the state meet.
Dilley’s Rodriguez recorded a state qualifying total lift, 725 lbs. in the 123-lb. division that she competed in, to earn a trip to the Extraco Events Center in Waco this Friday.
Rodriguez recorded a total weight of 750 lbs., well above the threshold for a state qualifying bid. She tallied lifts of 270 lbs. in the squat, 180 lbs. in the bench press and 300 lbs. in the deadlift.
Saylene Torres also competed for Dilley. She was sixth in the 259-lb. division with a total lift of 880 lbs.
Reyna Martel was ninth at 132 lbs. with a lift of 730 lbs. Natalie Garza, Anamarie Rodriguez, Lexi Ramirez and Sydney Ybarra were all 11th in their respective weight divisions. Garza at 97 lbs., Rodriguez at 132 lbs., Ramirez at 181 lbs. and Ybarra at 259 lbs.
Jaslyn Ochoa was 13th in the 114-lb. weight class.
Also competing at the Region V Division III Championships at Edcouch-Elsa High School, the Cowgirls had two lifters finish in the top two of their respective weight class while a third recorded a state qualifying total lift.
Stephanie Benavidez earned the regional championship in the 148-lb. class with a total lift of 920 lbs. She recorded lifts of 385 lbs. in the squat, 195 lbs. in the bench press and 340 lbs. in the deadlift.
Jennifer Benavidez was second in the 132-lb. division with a total lift of 830 lbs. She recorded a squat of 330 lbs., a bench press of 165 lbs. and deadlift of 335 lbs.
Regina Seidel finished fifth in the 198-lb. weight class but recorded a state qualifying total lift of 890 lbs. The state qualifying total for an automatic bid in her division is 830 lbs. She recorded a squat of 365 lbs., bench of 185 lbs. and deadlift of 340 lbs.
Jenivae Rodriguez finished seventh in the 220-lb. division with a total lift of 805 lbs. while Bianca Cordova was 11th at 148 lbs. and Davira Gonzalez came in 13th in the 97-lb. division.
