2020 UIL FALL SPORTS
The San Antonio Independent School District’s wildly unpopular decision to delay all in-person athletics until the first week of October has forced a schedule change for Pearsall as the Mavericks can no longer take on the Lanier Voks in a scheduled September 24 scrimmage.
“At this time, SAISD Athletics will remain 100% virtual due to the uncertain COVID-19 circumstances in and around Bexar County. The new SAISD start date for in-person Athletics is October 5,” a press release from the district said.
The University Interscholastic League has allowed for athletic practices for 5A and 6A high schools to begin on September 7 with football games starting on September 24.
Pearsall, which opens their season on October 2 against La Vernia, had its only scrimmage of the season slated for September 24 against Lanier.
With SAISD’s delay, that contest was no longer possible.
Pearsall will now take on the Southside Cardinals at Mack Laxson Field on Thursday, September 24. The junior varsity will take the field at 5:30 p.m. with varsity beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Cardinals will prove to be a tough test early on for Pearsall as Southside is the favorite to take 14-5A, Division I. The Cardinals were 7-4 a year ago, falling to regional semifinalist Sharyland Pioneer at bi-district.
The Mavericks are slated to kick off the regular season against another tough foe in 2-0 La Vernia.
The Bears have posted consecutive wins over Cuero and state-ranked Navarro.
