Suspected gunman still at large
A high-speed pursuit that began in Dimmit County ended near Pearsall on Sunday, October 18, with one suspect in custody and one still at large.
Officers handling the case have confirmed that the incident included shots being fired at law enforcement and that the pursuit by sheriff’s deputies and state troopers continued through La Salle County and into Frio County before coming to a halt near McKinley Field, the local airport.
According to a report on the case, it was when Dimmit County law enforcement officers noted a traffic violation and attempted to stop a 2019 Honda Pilot sport utility vehicle that the driver accelerated and sped from the scene to evade capture. Further reports have indicated that the Honda had been listed as a stolen vehicle.
The driver led officers at speed through Catarina, east into La Salle County, before heading north on IH-35 towards Cotulla, Dilley and Pearsall. Sheriff’s deputies from Dimmit, La Salle and Frio counties along with Texas Highway Patrol troopers were able to stop the car shortly before it reached Pearsall.
Officers have since confirmed that the vehicle passenger fired shots at law enforcement officers when the pursuit ended. Police have arrested the vehicle driver, whose identity is currently being withheld.
The passenger, still unidentified, remains at large this week and may be in the Pearsall area.
The case is being investigated by the Texas Rangers with the assistance of agencies involved. Further details were not made public as of presstime.
