It was while on routine patrol that a Pearsall police officer discovered that a Chevrolet Tahoe had run into a privacy fence and struck a light pole in front of a home on Oak Street.
During the roadside interview, 24-year-old Christian Pena allegedly admitted to consuming liquor before getting behind the wheel of the sport utility vehicle, according to police.
A report on the case indicates that Pena admitted crashing his vehicle into the fence and power line pole because he had diverted his attention from the road ahead to check his cell phone.
The accident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. and left residents and businesses on the north side of town without power until midday Sunday.
Pena was transported to the Frio County Jail and is being charged with a Class B misdemeanor for driving while intoxicated.
