Frio County commissioners ratified a grant agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation Infrastructure Fund during a meeting on Monday, November 9.
The $1.1 million grant will fund the repairs and replacement of the aging bridges throughout the county.
“We learned of the application process for the grant in late March and it was due by May,” Pct. 4 Commissioner Jose Asuncion said in a phone interview last week.
Asuncion described the application process as rigorous and called for several technical guidelines, requirements and commitments from the county.
The commissioner attributes the grant awarding to the diligence of Frio County Engineer Roxana Garcia.
“She was able to make the quick turnaround for submission,” the commissioner said. “Ms. Garcia worked in collaboration with S&B, who gathered data that had not been kept in road and bridge records but was necessary for the application that resulted in the $1,080,113 award.”
The majority of the grant will cover repairs to two bridges over San Miguel Creek, according to county officials, as the bridges are frequently affected by heavy rains, rendering them impassable. The remaining funds will be used to repair other roads in the county.
“Without the grant, the cost burden is too high for the county to take action,” Asuncion said.
