Flores, 89

Julia M. Flores, 89 of Cotulla, died on November 27, 2020. She was born on December 26, 1930 in Woodward to Martin Mata and Dionicia Mendoza Mata and raised by her grandmother Juanita Mendoza.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Luis G. Flores Sr., daughter Mary Lou Flores, sister Juanita Alvarez and brothers Ignacio Mata and Matias Mata and granddaughter MaryAnn Tellez.
She is survived by her sons Francisco Flores and wife Nora of Gardendale and Luis Flores Jr. and wife Elsa of Cotulla. She is also survived by grandchildren Isaias Tellez, Michael Tellez, Eugene Tellez, Alex Tellez, Paul Tellez, Michele Tellez Lambrecht, Frankie Flores, Elida (Elda) Huron, Dolly Oltivero, Hannah Hernandez, Luis Flores III, Elaizah Flores and Elisabeth Flores, over 30 great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

During the 1970’s when the Christian Charismatic movement hit the United States, Julia, along with other local families chose to leave their church and started the first non-denominational church in Cotulla by gathering at Julia’s back yard under a huge tree. They would bring in preachers from out of town and worship would be led by Luis Sanchez and Alejandro Romo.

Julia was an avid reader and religiously studied the Bible and eventually went on to become an Ordained Minister.
Visitation was held on Monday, November 30 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Peter’s Funeral Home in Cotulla with a celebration of life service at 6 p.m. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 1 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cotulla Cemetery.
Pallbearers included Francisco Flores, Luis Flores, Jr, Luis Flores, III, Samuel Huron, Orlando Jai Oltivero and Rene Alvarez.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Peters Funeral Home, Cotulla.
