Cotulla gridders earn all-district nods

Eleven Cowboys were named to the District 14-3A Division II all-district football team following the playoff exit of each of the league’s playoff representatives.
Jourdanton was eliminated from postseason play in the regional semifinal round, as the Indians lost a 31-14 decision to Llano.
The Cowboys had four players named to the all-district first team as sophomore wide receiver Thallan Olivarri and junior offensive tackle Eric Ortega were offensive selections. Senior defensive back Andres Cruz and senior linebacker Wilbert Ringer were named to the defensive first team.
Senior running back Zerrick Benavides and senior quarterback Eliahs Jones were second-team all-district selections on offense while junior linebacker Michael Flores and junior defensive end Eric Ortega were second-team defensive picks.
Sophomore fullback Jesse Sanchez, junior tackle Rudy Velasquez, senior center Leo Martinez, senior defensive back Eliahs Jones, freshman defensive tackle Robert Sanchez and senior defensive tackle Blayde Martinez were all given honorable mention for Cotulla.
The Cowboys played a COVID-shortened season of only six games, losing all six although the team was competitive in all but two outings finishing 0-6, with all coming in 14-3A, Division I play.
