Cotulla Cowgirls’ cross country and track athlete Aaliyah Charo has signed a letter of intent to compete in both sports at the University of North Alabama during a ceremony last week.
Charo signed her letter of intent during a ceremony at her home with her parents. UNA is a Division I public university in Florence, Alabama. It is the state’s oldest four-year public university.
Charo will be a Biology and pre-med major and earned a $62,500, four-year scholarship and had the $9,600 out-of-state fee waived on an academic scholarship.
A four-year letter in cross country, Charo was a four-time regional qualifier, placing in the top three at the 2019 Region IV meet and improved significantly at the state meet in 2019. She was the 2020 District 30-3A champion.
“I am extremely proud of Aaliyah as she wasted no time researching her schools of interest that had her field of study and after some offers and much consideration, she stated that she could not let go of this opportunity with UNA,” CHS Cross Country Coach Jose Olvera said. “She committed by signing her letter of intent and is now on the UNA Lion cross country and track roster.
“I am proud to have been her coach for the last two years. This honor is well deserved and I have no doubt that she will give them one hundred percent. I am excited for her. Congratulations Aaliyah!”
UNA acknowledged Charo’s signing on its official Instagram page, noting “We are excited to officially welcome Aaliyah Charo to the UNA cross country family!”
