Pearsall girls take on Class 5A competition, drop three in non-district action.
Pearsall continued its torrid schedule last week, playing three games in five days against larger Class 5A schools and dropped all three although they rallied in the final minutes of a four-point loss to San Antonio Southwest Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Mavs hit to road to take on San Antonio McCollum and San Antonio Harlandale on Tuesday, December 8 and Friday, December 11. They then hosted SA Southwest on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. tipoff.
“We are trying not to get too ahead of ourselves and stay in the moment,” PHS Head Coach Arlene Silva said. “ We need to learn from our mistakes and keep growing with each opponent. There is always a silver lining.”
McCollum won a 55-24 decision on Tuesday as they raced to a 20-4 first period lead.
The Cowgirls then outscored Pearsall 15-6 in the second as they built a 35-10 halftime lead. McCollum built a 49-14 lead through three periods of play. The Lady Mavs outpointed McCollum 10-6 in the fourth.
Marisa Berrelez led the team with eight points and three rebounds while Alba Dominguez added six points, two assists, two steals and two rebounds.
Sophia Garza tallied five points and pulled down 21 rebounds. Natalie Vega had three points and five rebounds while Lauren Reed had two points and three rebounds.
Nevaeh Ramon had four steals for Pearsall while Loreli Reyes contributed one point, an assist, two steals, two rebounds and a block. Saynika Weaver also added one assist, one steal and three rebounds.
Pearsall then took on Harlandale Friday evening and dropped a 64-29 decision.
Another slow start hurt the Lady Mavs as they fell behind 18-3 to the Indians. The team picked up its scoring in the second quarter but trailed 30-13 at intermission. Harlandale then outscored the Lady Mavs 34-16 in the second half to roll to the 35-point win.
Linda Vasquez led the team with seven points, two assists and three rebounds while Garza added six points and eight rebounds for Pearsall. Reed and Berrelez both finished with four points apiece. Alyssa Garcia filled the stat sheet as she had three points, one steal, seven rebounds and four blocks. Reed added a steal, three rebounds and a block while Berrelez also had two assists, a rebound and a block. Ramon tallied a point, a steal, one assist and three rebounds. Dominguez and Reyes both had two points apiece.
In a tight outing against Southwest, the Lady Dragons appeared to pull away in the second, building a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. Pearsall rallied down the stretch, however, closing to within seven points with about five minutes to play. The Lady Mavs then made another run in the final minute of play but came up short in a 34-30 loss.
The team earned a much-needed bye on Tuesday, December 15 but return to action this Friday as the host Devine in a non-district affair. The Lady Mavs will then take on Ingram Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest. Pearsall will close out its non-district schedule with a pair of home games on December 22 against Bandera and December 29 against Ingram.
