Organization invites local residents to apply
Meals on Wheels San Antonio wants Frio residents to know how to apply for meal delivery services, particularly during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Residents of Frio who live alone, are elderly or have mobility challenges may be searching for help and resources due to challenges brought on by the current health crisis, according to Meals on Wheels San Antonio in a prepared statement this week. The organization has extended its service to Frio County and says it is ready to support residents who want to apply for to receive meals delivered straight to their homes.
“We have been serving Frio for two years, and even expanded our service area to eight additional counties over the course of 2020,” Meals on Wheels San Antonio CEO Vinsen Faris said. “Whether you are facing new mobility challenges due to the pandemic or now fit our standard criteria of service, we are committed to serving South Texas during this critical time.”
Meals on Wheels San Antonio describes itself as an essential service to thousands of clients every year and reports that multiple pandemic challenges have increased the interest list to over 1,700 new clients starting home delivery since mid-March.
“With the support of volunteers, the staff continues to provide relief for community members and expand their support beyond Bexar County,” the organization reported.
Due to COVID-19, the meal delivery organization has changed its system to ensure clients, volunteers and staff remain healthy and safe, the statement indicated.
Meals on Wheels delivers six chilled meals to Frio clients once a week on Fridays.
The fastest way to refer someone or apply for Meals on Wheels services is online at www.mowsatx.org/referral or by calling (866) 80-MOWSA (866-806-6972). Eligibility for the service is holistic and not solely based on income or age.
Those who live in Frio or other Texas counties that are unable to cook for themselves, leave their home or who cannot drive may be eligible for Meals on Wheels meal delivery service. If someone does not meet eligibility criteria but needs assistance, they are encouraged to apply or call.
“Meals on Wheels knows that every situation is different and evaluates requests case by case,” the organization reported.
