Mavs rally in second half to top Bulldogs in non-district hoops outing.
Pearsall outscored Bandera in three of the four quarters en route to a 66-59 non-district win in basketball action last Friday, January 8.
The Mavericks led 14-10 in the first period but Bandera surged in the second, outscoring Pearsall 17-12 in the stanza to grab a 27-26 halftime advantage.
Pearsall fell behind by as many as nine points in the third but rallied late in the stanza to grab a 43-41 lead going into the final period of play. There they outscored the Bulldogs 21-18 to take the seven-point victory.
“We’ve been on a roll these past few games,” PHS Head Coach John Hernandez said. “David Rendon and Mark Ovalle have really stepped up to lead the team.
“I’m very happy with the ball we’ve been playing. All these games have us ready to head into district play.”
David “Bear” Rendon led the team as he finished with 20 points and ten rebounds while Mark Ovalle added 13 points, two steals and two rebounds.
RJ Ortiz also added ten points, two rebounds and a steal.
Nicholas Martinez and Jasiah Vaquera both finished with eight points apiece. Martinez added three rebounds and a steal while Vaquera added a pair of boards.
Joey Ramirez finished with four points, five rebounds and a block.
Pearsall’s momentum going into district play has been stalled by the news this week that all basketball activities will be halted until January 19.
Pearsall ISD Athletic Director Edward Bocanegra said this week that out of an abundance of caution, the district would half its sports activities due to rising local virus cases.
The Mavs were scheduled to host Hondo on Tuesday, January 12 and be at Carrizo Springs on Friday, January 15. Those games were pushed back to January 23 and January 30.
Pearsall will return to action on Friday, January 22 as they host Uvalde in its first District 30-4A matchup of the season.
