Pearsall’s Lady Mavs dropped a pair of decisions as they opened District 30-4A play last week, falling to Uvalde and Crystal City in basketball action.
Those losses were overshadowed this week with the news that Pearsall was suspending basketball action for the week and postponing a pair of games until the end of the month.
Pearsall dropped a 32-29 decision to Uvalde on Tuesday, January 5 and then fell at home to Crystal City, losing a 46-32 decision.
PISD Athletic Director Edward Bocanegra annnounced on Tuesday that the district would half basketball activities until January 19 out of an abundance of caution due to rising cases of the virus locally.
The Lady Mavs were scheduled to host Hondo on Tuesday, January 12 and be at Carrizo Springs on Friday, January 15. Those games were pushed back to January 23 and January 30.
In the loss to Uvalde, Pearsall held a first period lead only to see the Lobos rally from there to take a three-point win.
Pearsall led 9-6 after the first and 14-13 at intermission. Uvalde then outscored Pearsall 10-7 in the third to take a 23-21 lead into the fourth. There they held off a Pearsall rally to win the game.
Linda Vasquez led the team with eight points, three steals and three rebounds while Natalie Vega added six points, a steal and three steals.
Alba Dominguez had five points, four assists, two steals and four rebounds for Pearsall while Lauren Reed tallied three points, a rebound and a steal.
Alyssa Garcia had two points, a steal, four rebounds and a block and Nevaeh Ramon pitched in two points, a steal and a rebound.
Loreli Reyes and Kari Garcia combined for three points and ten rebounds while Emily Valle also pulled down a pair of boards.
Another quick start and slow finish doomed Pearsall in their loss to Crystal City. The Lady Mavs jumped out to a 14-8 lead on the Lady Javelinas but things turned over the course of the contest. Crystal City outscored Pearsall 27-12 in the second and third periods as they pulled ahead 35-26 going into the final stanza.
In the fourth, Crystal City held off a late Pearsall surge to take the 15-point win.
Dominguez led Pearsall with ten points, three assists, two steals and three rebounds while Marisa Berrelez also added ten points, seven rebounds, a steal and a block.
Vasquez finished with seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal and Alyssa Garcia tallied five points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Ramon also added two points, a steal and a rebound for Pearsall.
Pearsall is slated to return to action on January 19. The Lady Mavs have an open date that week and are scheduled to take on Uvalde on Friday, January 22.
