What’s up, Murphy?
I got about a month to get this straight… I need a good Valentine’s gift for my girlfriend, but I’m stumped.
See, we made a deal that we wouldn’t just buy each other stuff, we’d buy each other an experience… you know, something to do. Her favorite bands aren’t doing concerts right now, a mani-pedi or massage or something isn’t really her style, and a fishing or hunting trip is probably what she’ll be buying me, and I can’t just buy the same thing. Can you help a guy out?
JD
JD,
You really gotta give a guy somethin to go on when you ask a question like that.
I’ll guess she likes outdoors stuff since you said you’d buy her a fishin trip if you didn’t think she was already buyin you one.
If you like to travel a bit, there’s some good parks north of San Antone. Inks Lake is north of Johnson City, but it’s a nice place. Enchanted Rock is someplace everybody ought to go at least once. Fredericksburg is always nice, too. Find a nice bed and breakfast near any of these places and I think you’re good as gold.
Trouble is you might already be too late to get a place for Valentine’s Day… still worth a shot. If you wanna go toward the ocean, try out Port O’Connor or Rockport-Fulton. Great places to spend a weekend, and more to do than fishin, but you could still go fishin.
If you need somethin a bit less grandiose, I’m gonna recommend you get creative. It’s the right time of year for campin in Texas, at least it ain’t cold. And there’s never a bad time for a shootin range date.

Hi, Murphy.
My kid has decided he wants to learn guitar. He doesn’t want to be in the school band, but he’s just decided he needs to learn guitar some other way. I’m just not sure that I want to spend money on lessons and a guitar just to have him decide he wants nothing to do with it. Do I go with this and see if he sticks with it or is it a bad move to just try to steer him in a different direction?
LeeAnne
Hi LeeAnne,
Does your boy make a habit of interest in somethin but not followin through? Maybe think, how long has he been askin about this?
Truth be told, a person can learn just about everythin you can imagine by watchin videos on the internet. I’d be willin to bet you could find a decent deal on a guitar. Have a look around online, maybe try a pawn shop.
If you really want to push for it, make a deal with him that he has to keep at it for a month or two without givin up, or a deal that he earns somethin special if he learns somethin? Say you’ll buy him a better guitar if he learns how to actually use it. And if you think about it, what’s $50 on a used guitar and your boy spendin time watchin stuff on YouTube that might actually do him some good, instead of playin on some video game all the time?
