Filing period ends Feb. 12 for mayor, two councilors
The city of Dilley will join other municipalities in holding an election on Saturday, May 1, for the offices of mayor and two councilors.
The period for filing an application to be placed on the ballot in the Dilley municipal election opened on Monday last week and continues through 5 p.m. on Friday, February 12. All potential candidates are required by the Texas Secretary of State to have their applications signed and stamped by a notary public before submitting the documents to City Hall.
This year, Dilley’s election will be for the seat of mayor, currently held by Mary Ann Obregon; Place 1, currently held by Alexandria Inocencio; and Place 2, currently held by Joanne Rodriguez. City Hall has yet to confirm whether any of the three office holders have filed applications to run for new terms.
Obregon has served as mayor of Dilley since 2009, after which she was re-elected six times. She also served as mayor in the 1990s and early 2000s, but did not hold the office for three consecutive terms after 2003, while Manuel Garcia was mayor for one term, 2003-05, and while Rusty Foster held the office for two, 2005-09.
Both Councilors Incencio and Rodriguez are completing their first two-year terms in office this year.
Dilley’s council seats do not have term limits and are citywide with no specific districts or precincts.
City Hall was forced to move its election in 2020 to a later date due to health and safety concerns during the coronavirus pandemic, eventually holding the event for three seats at the council table concurrently with county, state and federal elections on November 3. This year’s election is presently scheduled to be held on its long-established date but may be moved pending a decision by the Texas secretary of state, according to government representatives.
Complete election information for places on the municipal ballot can be found on the city’s website.
