Investigators say Alvaro Corona may have been shot dead by 17-year-old in gang-related dispute
A 17-year-old Pearsall boy is being listed by the police department as a significant person of interest in connection with the shooting death of a local man and has been remanded into custody.
In a brief statement regarding the ongoing investigation into the murder of Alvaro “Upoo” Corona, 19, on Saturday, January 9, the Pearsall Police Department indicated this week that investigators regard a local teen as a prime suspect.
Corona was found with a fatal gunshot injury on a Pearsall west-side street on Saturday, January 9. It was the second time in two days that he had been shot.
Police reported after the earlier incident that Corona was reluctant to discuss details of his apparent assault in an interview Friday night.
Corona was killed the following day without making further statements to assist the investigation.
Police have indicated that the 17-year-old suspect has been remanded into custody on unrelated juvenile warrants but was still being held without bail this week.
The Frio County Sheriff’s Office and the city police department believe the murder was connected to a gang-related dispute but have not indicated whether investigators believe either of the two involved in the case was recognized as a gang member by the criminal organizations themselves.
