As the filing period for a place on the upcoming municipal election ballot draws to a close, the city of Pearsall is confirming this week only three people have returned applications.
The number of potential candidates on the ballot for the Dilley City Council is likewise small. At Cotulla City Hall, no one had filed for a place in any of the three races in this year’s election as of Tuesday this week.
As of Tuesday morning, records filed at Pearsall City Hall indicate the two incumbent councilors, Davina Rodriguez and Roland Segovia, have submitted their applications for the May election.
Rodriguez currently holds Place 7 and will seek re-election. She is presently unopposed in her bid for a new term at the council table.
Segovia holds Place 6 on the council but has filed an application as a candidate for the mayor’s seat. Mary Moore has held the office for the past six years and is ineligible to seek re-election due to term-limit provisions in the Home Rule Charter.
Section 3.03 of the charter allows a person to serve three consecutive two-year terms; Moore was elected as mayor in 2015.
According to City Hall, JJ Rivera has placed his name in the running for Segovia’s seat and he too is currently running unopposed. Rivera ran in the November municipal election against James Leal. Leal prevailed over Rivera and currently serves in Place 1.
Abel Nieto, who was appointed to fill Place 5 after Councilor Robert Villarreal resigned, has yet to submit an application. There are presently no applicants for election to that seat on the council.
In Dilley, City Hall confirmed this week that each of the three council incumbents will face an opponent in this year’s election.
Former Councilor Gilbert Villanueva Eguia is looking to unseat long-serving Mayor Mary Ann Obregon. Incumbent Joe Garcia prevailed over Eguia in the November municipal elections for Place 5.
Alexandria Inocencio currently holds Place 1 on the Dilley City Council and will face Inelda Rodriguez in May; incumbent Joanne Rodriguez will face challenger Nathan Rodriguez.
The Cotulla city council election this year will be for three seats at the table. Incumbent Councilors Juan Garcia in Place 3, Luis Allala in Place 4, and Freddy Gonzalez in Place 5 are eligible to run for re-election but have yet to signal their intent, according to City Hall.
The filing deadline for municipal elections is Friday, February 12, at 5 p.m. The elections will be held Saturday, May 1.
