HIGH SCHOOL POWERLIFTING
Amid a slew of safety protocols implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pearsall’s powerlifting teams have kicked off their season with a meet in Somerset on Friday, January 29.
Five Mavericks placed in the top three in their weight divisions at the event while three of six Lady Mav athletes also finished in the top three.
“I think the kids performed well at the meet this weekend and are adjusting well to having to wear a mask while lifting,” PHS Powerlifting Head Coach Guadalupe Torres said. “These boys and girls are working hard each day and are setting new personal bests for each of their lifts.
“I am very excited to see what this season brings for these boys and girls.”
The Lady Mavs had five lifters earn state qualifying berths a year ago.
Alamar Garcia, a returning state qualifier, took first in the 114-lb. division with a total lift of 710 lbs. She posted lifts of 295 lbs. in the squat, 140 lbs. in the bench press and 275 lbs. in the deadlift.
Emily Valle was second at 132 lbs., posting lifts of 205 lbs. in the squat, 100 lbs. in the bench and 245 lbs. in the deadlift for a total lift of 550 lbs.
Araceli Bocanegra also finished third in the 132-lb. weight class with a total lift of 470 lbs. She posted lifts of 155 lbs. in the squat, 100 lbs. in the bench press and 215 lbs. in the deadlift.
Sol Selvera was fifth at 97 lbs. Amanda Garcia was sixth in the 123-lb. weight class and Llubia Rodriguez was also sixth in the 181-lb. division.
Eden Fuentes won the 181-lb. division with a total weight of 1,245 lbs. He posted lifts of 500 lbs. in the squat, 295 lbs. in the bench and 450 lbs. in the deadlift. Ray Leal also took first in the 220-lb. division. He recorded lifts of 525 lbs. in the squat, 280 lbs. in the bench press and 515 lbs. in the deadlift for a total lift of 1,320 lbs.
Kollin Meeks was second in the 275-lb. weight class with a total lift of 1,380 lbs. His lifts included 620 lbs. in the squat, 355 lbs. in the bench and 405 lbs. in the deadlift.
Brandon Rivas and Ariel Hernandez were both third in the 275-lb. and 181-lb. divisions, respectively. Rivas posted a total lift of 1,270 lbs. while Hernandez tallied a total weight of 1,105 lbs.
Adrian Hernandez was sixth in the 165-lb. division, Francisco Rivera was sixth at 132 lbs., Osvaldo Leal was eighth at 181 lbs. and Diego Carrasco finished 13th at 165 lbs.
Pearsall is scheduled to compete in Cotulla this Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
