Dilley lifters collect gold, silver medals at dual meet in Cotulla.
The Dilley Wolves Powerlifting team competed in a dual meet with Cotulla on Thursday, January 28 and had six athletes nab first or second place medals at the event.
Damien Rodriguez, Carlos Gonzalez and Vicente Correa all earned victories in their respective weight classes.
“Overall, we had a great team effort,” DHS Powerlifting Head Coach Rene Maldonado said. “These athletes, along with Adrian Carrazco, continue to work hard as they prepare to qualify for their regional meet.”
Damien Rodriguez won in the 132-lb. division, Carlos Gonzalez took first in the 181-lb. weight class and Vicente Correa was first in the 198-lb. division.
Gabe Tijerina finished second in the 275-lb. division, Lionel Martinez was also second at 242 lbs. and Jhonathan Trevino was second in the 165-lb. weight class.
Lifters who rank in the top twelve totals for their weight class in each region and in each division will qualify for regional meets.
A lifter who qualifies for the regional meet may qualify for the state meet by either finishing first or second in his weight class or by posting a qualifying total for his class as posted on the Texas High School Powerlifting Association website.
Alex Alvarez is currently tenth in the region, Rodriguez is 11th in the region in his division while Gonzalez and Correa are on the cusp of qualifying as they sit 13th in their respective divisions in the regional standings.
The final qualifying date for the regional meet is February 27 and the regional meet is tentatively slated for March 11-13 at Bishop. The state meet is also scheduled for March 27 in Abilene.
