I have to replace so many of the plants at my place after this extreme weather. Everything looks like it’s been actually burned! I don’t know if I should just stick with the same plants or if I should look for new kinds of plants… it’s very overwhelming.
Don’t get in a big hurry to start diggin stuff up and throwin it out. Some plants will look terrible, but they’ll come back out in a month or so, so you don’t want to get ahead of the game. You’ll wanna cut out damaged parts on wood type stuff in the spring. A good way to tell if they bit the big one or if they’re gonna come out the other side is scratchin the bark at the end of winter. If it’s green underneath, they might just pull through, cause that’s live tissue. They’re gonna lose all their leaves, but you mighta got lucky. If it’s brown and dried, it’s a dead stem.
Now cactus is a different story. They hold onto a load of water, and when they get real cold they get real messed up. That don’t mean it’s over though, cause cactus is real tough. Don’t cut nothin off of it, just leave it and keep an eye on it for a few weeks. On somethin like aloe or agave, pull real gentle on some of the inside leaves and see if the core’s got damage. If they pull out easy and they’re black or mushy at the base, you’re outta luck. But if you see that good green color in the middle, keep an eye out for new leaves and growth, cause they mighta beat the Snowpocalypse!
And don’t be afraid to call a garden expert, or your extension agent if you got specific questions about stuff like this. They’re pretty useful.
I’m supposed to be getting a new car, but I’m having a really hard time narrowing down what I want. There’s so many things to consider and so many options, how do I choose just one? You seem like someone who’s got a no-nonsense answer for a problem like this!
Hey Can’t Choose,
I’m sure thankful that I’ve got my truck. And I’m thankful that if I had to have a new truck, I’d just go get another one exactly the same. I’ve been drivin the same kind of truck since I was 19 and I ain’t changin that up any time soon.
Don’t make the mistake of goin to a car lot and just pickin the one that looks prettiest with a bunch of shiny nonsense and your favorite color. There’s a whole lot more to a car than that. All the particulars under the hood can add up to the wrong fit for you if you’re not careful.
If you gotta make a change, I’d say make a list of what you need in a vehicle. Probably start with figurin out if you need a car, truck, or SUV. Are you gonna be drivin on good roads and the highway, or do you need to make it down some ranch roads? Is 4×4 somethin you need to consider? Think real hard about if you want to look at new or used vehicles, too. Sometimes used ones can work out better than new ones, especially for your wallet.
