The Caddel-Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas recently took their Traveling Trunk to the Texas Independence Celebration in Utopia at the request of the Sabinal Canyon Museum.
It is an honor to be asked back each year.
“We began collecting things for our trunk four years ago,” Caddell-Smith DAR representative Billie Nast said. “Each district of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas has a Traveling Trunk. However, our district trunk’s home is in San Antonio.
“That is a bit far to travel to get it and find the location where it is being kept and then take it right back. JoAnn Heiligman suggested that we have our own chapter trunk. These are a few of the items in our trunk: rub board, horn cup, lye soap, scissors, thread bobbin, sugar cones, wooden hand mirror, corn husk dolls, and hand sickle.”
Nast said that 215 Utopia ISD students come through the Museum at the celebration.
“They were excited to be able to touch and pick up the items from the trunk,” she said. “They even were allowed to try on bonnets and coonskin hats. We also have a collection of replicas of the early frontier toys. They were amazed with the ‘rock marbles’ and the ‘buzz saw.’”
