Lady Mavs hold off Uvalde 10-7 to earn first round sweep in District 30-4A.
Pearsall took sole possession of first place and improved to 3-0 in league play with a 10-7 win over previously unbeaten Uvalde last Thursday, April 1.
The Lady Mavs’ inspired effort came on the same night that they honored Alina Valenzuela, the Pearsall Junior High School student who overcame numerous health complications due to COVID-19.
“Tonight was a super special night,” PHS Head Coach Tara Staten said. “We honored Alina Valenzuela for being strong and teaching us how to be #alinastrong.
“That little girl was our motivation tonight and we put everything we had on the line for her. I couldn’t be more proud of my girls.”
Pearsall also earned a first round sweep of its district opponents.
After surrendering a run to Uvalde at the top of the first, Pearsall scored five runs to grab a 5-1 lead going into the second. In what turned out to be a back-and-forth affair, Uvalde bounced back with a two out rally in the third to cut it to 5-4 on a double and pair of singles.
The Lady Mavs countered on a two-run double by Sophia Garza. She then stole home from first following a single by Brooke Gandara. Pearsall plated four runs in the stanza to go up 9-4 heading to the fourth.
Uvalde added a pair of runs on a pair of doubles in the fourth, cutting the margin to 9-6. Pearsall countered with a run at the bottom of the inning as a baserunner stole home following an infield error by Uvalde to make it 10-6.
Pearsall snuffed out one final rally attempt by the Lobos in the sixth as Uvalde loaded the bases but managed only a single run after the umpire ruled that a pitch made contact with the batter.
The Lady Mavs then stymied Uvalde in the seventh to secure the three-run victory.
Pearsall will begin the second round of league play on April 13 as they travel to Carrizo Springs. They will then be at Crystal City on Friday, April 16.
