The Pearsall Maverick tennis team was district runners-up at the 30-4A tournament in Uvalde over the weekend.
Filip Lange was second in boys’ singles competition while Tavie Hernandez and Isay Hernandez were also second in mixed doubles’ play. Abraham Valdez and Jackson Beever were third in boys’ doubles action and will be alternates at regionals.
“I’ve seen major improvements in overall skills and knowledge of the game,” PHS Tennis Coach Unike Rodriguez said of her squad. “I believe the major factor that led to their success this season is the work ethic the team has.
“I have some athletes that put in additional time after practice by hitting extra balls or by running extra miles. I also have students that are involved in numerous Spring sports and still find the time to make it over to tennis practice. This shows me how dedicated they are to the program and how much they want to strive to be the best.
According to Rodriguez, her 2021 regional qualifiers are the first at the school in nearly a decade.
“This is very exciting for our tennis program,” she said.
The Region IV tournament will be held in Corpus Christi at the HEB Tennis Center on Wednesday, April 28 and 29.
