Pearsall Police Chief Humberto Torralba promoted Patrolman John Hernandez to the rank of sergeant on Tuesday, April 12.
“This individual is not only personable but has the ability to be a first-line supervisor,” the chief said of the new sergeant.
Fresh out of the academy, Hernandez joined the department in 2015 and has continued to serve his hometown since.
The 2012 Pearsall High School graduate said he always wanted to work his way up the ranks because he views his role as a police officer as not just a job, but a career.
“I felt that I was ready to pick up more responsibility,” the sergeant said of his decision to submit an application for consideration for the position. “I wanted to serve my community at a higher level.
According to the police chief, Hernandez and one other individual vying for the promotion underwent a written and oral examination.
“He not only has to address the situation but his officers as well,” Torralba said. “I believe he is ready for this.”
Sgt. Hernandez was pinned during the April 12 meeting by his parents, Juan and Angie Hernandez.
