Cotulla avenged its only district blemish, edging by Poth 15-13 and then crushed Natalia in their league finale to claim the District 27-3A championship last week in softball action.
The Cowgirls overcame deficits of 9-4 and 13-10 late in the game to top Poth in an April 20 contest. Cotulla led 4-3 in the second but Poth plated six runs in the third to grab a 9-4 advantage. The Cowgirls battled back with a run in the fourth and five more at the top of the sixth to go up 10-9.
Poth tallied four runs at the bottom of the sixth to reclaim a 13-10 advantage but Cotulla erupted for five runs in the seventh to run away with the win. The team belted out 14 hits and took advantage of five Poth errors.
The victory all but sealed the district title for Cotulla but the team still needed to take care of business in their finale against Natalia. Cotulla did just that with a dominating 14-4 win.
After a scoreless first, the Cowgirls plated five runs at the bottom of the second. Natalia answered with three runs in the second but Cotulla countered with three runs of their own to reclaim an 8-3 lead. Five runs in the fourth and one more in the fifth ended the game via the ten-run rule.
With the win the Cowgirls improved to 20-3-1 for the year and wrapped up league play with a 13-1 mark and the league title.
As the top seed, Cotulla will take on the Yoakum Lady Bulldogs Saturday, May 1 in Floresville at 6 p.m. The bi-district outing will be a one-game playoff.
This year’s district title marks the first since 1997 for the Cowgirls.
