Local track teams will send three athletes to the UIL State Track & Field Championships on Thursday, May 6 at Mike Meyers Stadium in Austin.
Pearsall’s Kiana Kebbi won a regional title in the 400m dash at the Class 4A, Region IV meet in Kingsville while Cotulla’s Raeann Charo claimed the regional title in the 100m dash at the Class 3A, Region IV meet at Converse Judson. Aaliyah Charo qualified for state via a second place finish in the 800m dash.
While Kebbi is the only state qualifier, the Lady Mavs finished 13th overall in a field of 31 teams at the event.
Raeann Charo was dominant at the event as she posted the fastest time in prelims and bested that effort in the finals with a winning time of 12.12. Aaliyah set a personal best time in taking second in the 800m run.
“These two girls still have some unfinished business and will be working hard the next few days to prepare for the state meet,” CHS track coach Susan Garcia said.
Maverick Jasiah Vaquera was fifth in the triple jump, fifth in the high jump and 12th in the long jump. He was one of seven Mavs competing at the event.
“We competed well against some great athletes from all over the region,” PHS boys’ track coach Julian Hernandez said. “We couldn’t be any more prouder of our track athletes, especially our seniors, who provided leadership and showed our younger athletes what hard work can get you.”

Aaliyah will kick off action at the state meet as the 800m run is slated for a 5:20 p.m. start time on May 6. Raeann is scheduled to run the 100m dash at 6:05 p.m. and Kebbi will hit the track for the 400m dash at 6:45 p.m.
