A three-run homerun in the fourth inning put the finishing touches on Llano’s 10-0 softball area playoff victory over Cotulla last Saturday afternoon in Wimberley.
The area playoff loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Cowgirls.
Llano scored ten runs on 11 hits while sophomore pitcher Maddie Kloepper tossed a shutout while allowing only three hits, struck out six and walked two.
The Yellowjackets scored a pair of runs at the bottom of the first and added two more in the second to build a 4-0 lead after two innings.
Cotulla had its best scoring opportunity at the top of the third as they loaded the based but could not bring in a run. The Cowgirls had another opportunity in the fourth as they led off the inning with a lead-off double but three straight outs stymied the Cowgirls’ efforts.
Llano then effectively put the game away in the fifth as a triple scored a run with one out. Freshman Gwyn Burnett then belted out a three-run homerun over the centerfield wall to put the Yellowjackets on top 8-0.
Two more runs came in in the fifth as Llano won via the ten-run rule.
Cotulla closed out its best season in school history with a 21-4-1 record overall. The Cowgirls were 13-1 in league play, winning the 27-3A championship and also claimed the bi-district title via a 12-5 decision over Yoakum.
