Members of the Dilley Volunteer Fire Department are joined by emergency responders from across Frio County on Friday evening, May 21, at a crash site on the IH-35 overpass at FM 117 in Dilley after an 18-wheel freighter with a cargo of ceramic tiles veered out of its lane of northbound traffic, collided with a guardrail, jackknifed on the bridge and caught fire. There are no reports of serious injury to the driver; investigators are looking into whether driver fatigue played a part in the wreck. The damaged vehicle was left partially hanging from the highway bridge, and much of its cargo had spilled. Responding agencies also included the Dilley Police Department, the Texas Highway Patrol and the Texas Department of Transportation. Interstate traffic was logjammed for several hours and diverted to the highway access road. Limited access to the wreckage and the extent of the damage resulted in a clean-up operation that lasted from 7:30 p.m. Friday until after 3 a.m. Saturday. The damaged vehicle was removed by the Tijerina and Telles wrecker services.
