City agrees to hire former director as consultant
Santos Alarcon, the chief financial officer for Pearsall, has been hired as a consultant for the city after resigning his fulltime position last week.
Alarcon was hired in November 2019 after Josie Carrizales left office. The city’s new finance director had been at the job just over a year and a half when he submitted a letter of resignation last month.
City Hall has indicated Alarcon has sought employment closer to his home in San Antonio.
“I would like to keep Santos on board to help with audit issues and it will be hard to find someone during budget season,” City Manager Federico Reyes said. “We do need help finalizing the budget.”
“I have come to appreciate his knowledge and expertise,” Mayor Ben Briscoe said. “We need this. Now is not the time for us to be without his knowledge. He is very much worth this, to cover this period which is critical.”
Reyes said he anticipates hiring a new finance director in September but urged councilors to consider approving the agreement with Alarcon.
Councilors approved a 90-day contract that allows Alarcon to work up to 20 hours per week.
“It is bittersweet from my perspective,” the former finance director said. “I have worked with some good people. That is the reason I am willing to help. I am committed to you guys succeeding.”
Alarcon said his new position enables him to answer phone calls, text messages and emails from city staff and councilors on finance-related issues.
