Barbecue and cornhole tournament winners have been named at the inaugural Moore Summer Fest, which was held last weekend at the local community center.
“The Summer Fest Committee and the Moore Community Improvement Club, including Shelley Delgado (President) Bobby Evans (Vice President), Claudia Sturdevant (Treasurer) and Cassie Brewer (Secretary), Rosa Cubriel, Butch Studervant, Jesse Carrasco, Yolanda Castello, Elia Herrera, Telma Rodriguez, Bobby De Hoyas, Butch Sturdevant, Johnnie Evans, Beatrice Diaz, Martha Galindo and Dee Dominguez, all stepped up and helped out so graciously and gracefully,” MCIC President Shelley Delgado said. “We could not be prouder to have you all as volunteers representing the Moore Community.
“As much as our committee came together, this event wouldn’t be possible without the overwhelming support of our extended community. To everyone who shared with us a little bit of their time and talents on Saturday, thank you!”
The organization also thanked Frio County Sheriff Mike Morse, Medina County Sheriff Randy Brown, Frio Constable Rudy Ortegon, Frio County Lt. Josh Longoria and Frio County Chief Deputy Salinas who each sampled all ten entries and determined the winners.
The first place team was B&E BBQ from Devine, God’s Country BBQ from Hondo was second and Smoking Too Loud BBQ from Pearsall finished third.
“We would also like to thank the Moore Volunteer Fire Department and Fire Chief JD Earls for cooking the sausage for our sausage wrap sale,” Delgado said. “Thanks also go out to Laura Dominquez for hosting and facilitating our donation collection for the miscellaneous items and coordinating the pre-sale sausage plate tickets and to our local volunteers for making the beans and potato salad.
“Thanks to Jesse Carrasco and Sonny Moreno, who provided the sausage for the plate sale and to DJ King Rat for keeping the party going, rain or shine, and for donating his time and efforts into making Summer Fest even more memorable.
“Lucinda Rangel organized and kept the kids games going for the little ones even with the challenges of the rain that the duck pond couldn’t even overcome.”
The committee also thanks the many donors who provided items for the silent auction.
There were 12 teams in the rain-delayed Cornhole Tournament and winners included Joel and Erik, first place; Joe and Billy, second place and Rudy and Josh (aka The Law), third place.
“We really hope our barbecue and cornhole contestants and vendors had fun and were successful and we can’t wait to have you all again next year, if not sooner,” Delgado said. “We hope Summer Fest didn’t just serve as a time of fun and games but also as motivation for you and your family to continue to support our community and come together.”
“Don’t hesitate to come join us at our next meeting on August 4 and at our Moore Monster Mash on October 30. We love to see people come out and support us but we love having additional people come to our meeting even more. Once again, thank you all so so much, it was a collaborative effort and it quite literally would not be possible without all of you. We are already making notes on how to make next year’s event bigger and better.”
