Dr. Harold Campbell, a graduate of LSU Health Services Center School of Medicine, is joining the staff of Frio Regional Hospital as the hospital’s general surgeon.
Dr. Campbell will be the only general surgeon within a 50-mile radius of the hospital.
According to a press release, FRH conducted a nation-wide search to find a surgeon that was not only an exceptionally qualified and an experienced surgeon, but someone who would seamlessly blend into the hospital’s culture and embrace the rural Texas community.
“Studies show patients heal better and have better outcomes when they are treated close to home where they have access to post-surgical care and emotional support from their friends and families,” said John Hughson, CEO Frio Regional Hospital. “It can be a hardship for patients to drive into San Antonio for surgery, especially for an extended hospital stay. Adding Dr. Campbell to our team allows us to offer procedures right here in Frio County.”
Dr. Campbell will be moving to Texas from Asheville, North Carolina, where for the past four years has been a Resident Surgeon at Mountain Area Health Education Center. He will be responsible for preoperative diagnosis of the patient, for performing the operation and for providing the patient with postoperative surgical care and any necessary treatment. Basic surgeries include common abdominal complaints such as appendicitis, hernias, gallbladder, stomach, and intestinal issues.
The new surgeon is board eligible and certified in advanced trauma life support (ATLS) and advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS).
Dr. Campbell, who is fluent in English, French and Spanish, also speaks Arabic, thanks to his family’s Egyptian roots. He and his wife Miriam have two children aged seven and four.
