The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) Advisory Team 58/73 held a reunion of military service members who were assigned to Team 58/73 headquartered in the town of Vi Thanh, Chuong Thien Province, Mekong River Delta, South Vietnam, between 1963 through 1975, at Springfield, Illinois, July 15-18.
The Advisory Team was initially Team 58 in early 1963, but later changed to Team 73 in 1965.
In Vietnam, the MAVC Advisors trained, assisted, and participated with the South Vietnamese Army in tactical maneuvers, intelligence collection, logistical preparations, artillery support, and other matters during their duty tours.
Advisory Team 58/73 members gathered in Springfield, Illinois, with many traveling from all parts of the United States to participate in gatherings for remembrances, meals and team pictures.
Reunion activities included a tour of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, tour of the Illinois State Capitol Building, and a tour of Lincoln’s home. Team members also visited the Air Combat Museum and dined at the Island Bay Yacht Club on Friday, July 16.
A special, traditional lunch was featured on Saturday, July 17, at the Mimosa Vietnamese Restaurant. The group then visited Lincoln’s Tomb and the Illinois Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
In a time-honored tradition, the attending members held a remembrance ceremony honoring 12 team advisors killed in action during their Vietnam duty tour. As the team chaplain read the fallen team member’s name, a reunion member would stand and answer “PRESENT” as a sign that the fallen member is not forgotten. The ceremony was held at the reunion’s formal dinner on Saturday, July 17.
Manuel G. Trevino, a 1964 graduate of Pearsall High School, and a commissioned United States Army Second Lieutenant at St. Mary’s University in 1969, served as an Advisor with Team 73 during 1970 – 1971, and attended the reunion.
