HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Local schools opened the cross country season last weekend at the six-team Pearsall Cross Country Meet on Saturday, August 21.
Pearsall took the boys’ title with 25 total points and the Lady Mavs topped Comfort for first with 24 points.
Dilley’s Anthony Guerra took first overall in the boys’ division but the Mavs placed six runners in the top ten to sweep the team title.
Zaine Leal was second, Jorge Herrada was fourth, Romeo Vega finished fifth, Dylan Ortiz took sixth, CJ Garza was eighth and Alejandro Briseno was tenth. Matthew Frazier was also 13th for the Mavs.
The Lady Mavs had eight athletes finish in the top 15 while six cracked the top ten.
Ebony Garza was second overall for the Lady Mavs, Tayla Elizondo was fourth, Layla Torres was fifth, Makayla Smart was sixth and Natalie Vega was seventh. Saynika Weaver finished tenth, Giselle Luna was 13th and Tori Vega finished 14th.
Jevan Torres, Devin Alva and Jonathan Viesca were third, fourth and fifth for the JV boys while Tori Ortiz won the JV girls’ division. Kari Garcia was second, Sol Selvera was fifth and Natalie Ortegon was sixth.
Chris Martinez was second in the eighth grade division, Ayden Rodriguez was fourth. Izalae Ovalle won the eighth grade girls’ division and Kalista Gutierrez was third.
Angelyn Montes won the seventh grade girls’ division, Annabel Diaz finished fifth, Savannah Jasso was sixth and Madaleigh Luna was tenth.
Sophomore Anthony Guerra led the Wolves as he took first in the boys’ division. Abraham Rodriguez was also 11th for the Wolves.
Chloe Rodriguez paced the Lady Wolves as she was third overall in the girls’ division.
“It was our first meet, a small meet with only six schools but I was very much impressed with how our runners ran and competed,” DHS Head Cross Country Coach Victor Flores said.
Julian Cruz won the JV division while Amos Osio was sixth. Aleazar Aguliar took first in the eighth grade level, Brazos Viesca was third and Jacob Garcia placed fifth.
Javon Arriazola capped a boys’ first place sweep as he won the seventh grade division. Ace Valdez was second and Nehemiah Osio was fourth. Jewlea Tate took second in the eighth grade division while Andrea Rodriguez was fifth. Saraii Berrelez Rodriguez finished 12th in the seventh grade division.
Pearsall will compete in Natalia this Saturday while Dilley will return to action this Saturday as the travel to Medina Valley.
