Sanchez rumbles for 165 yards and five touchdown as Cotulla strolls to 47-12 decision.
Cotulla overcame a slow start, scored 20 points in the second quarter behind a five touchdown effort from Jesse Sanchez as the Cowboys crushed La Pryor 47-12 in their season opener on Friday, August 27.
Sanchez accounted for 30 of the Cowboys 34 points through three quarters of play.
Coach James Weatherwax assumed head coaching duties for the Cowboys last Friday in place of Marcus Booker who is out indefinitely with a medical condition.
In his debut, Weatherwax saw the Cowboys sputter in the first as the team fell behind 12-0 behind a pair of passing scores from La Pryor. They kicked things into high gear in the second, however, behind the running of Sanchez.
He scored on runs of 21, three and 24 yards as he capped Cotulla drives. Cotulla was successful on two of three extra point attempts and took a 20-12 lead at intermission.
A pair of scores in each of the final two quarters and a defensive shutout sealed the win for the Cowboys in the 2021 opener.
Sanchez would go in from 18 yards and 48 yards out in the third as the Cowboys’ lead ballooned to 34-12 after three quarters of play.
Hilario Ayala broke loose on a 73-yard touchdown run and Thallan Olivarri went in from 46 yards out as the big plays kept coming in the fourth.
Cotulla needed only 40 offensive snaps to account for 424 yards of total offense, all on the ground and 18 first downs.
Sanchez paced the team with 165 yards on 12 carries and five scores. He average 13.8 yards per carry. Ayala added 130 yards on only five carries and a touchdown. Olivarri finished with 91 yards on four totes and a score as well. Joseph Salazar also rushed twice for 30 yards.
Defensively, the team recorded four sacks and had an interception.
Ayala was also a force on the defensive end with 13 total tackles. Aydan Ramirez finished with ten total tackles and Eric Ortega and Rudy Velasquez both had eight total tackles and two sacks apiece.
The Cowboys will look to keep their momentum going this week as they hit the road to Bandera for a battle with another set of Bulldogs. Bandera is 0-1 this season, having lost a 39-15 decision to Poteet last week.
