A Caldwell County couple, attempting to smuggle illegal immigrants, was arrested Sunday night after allegedly trying to flee from state troopers.
Frio County deputies say the couple was traveling in two separate vehicles on Highway 85 when state troopers effected a traffic stop on one of the vehicles at the Dimmit and Frio County lines.
According to a report on the case, the man complied with the trooper’s request and stopped the vehicle he was driving. However, his girlfriend who was behind the wheel of a 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe attempted to interfere with the traffic stop before fleeing the scene.
Multiple undocumented immigrants were found inside the man’s vehicle.
State troopers requested assistance from Frio County deputies who were able to locate the sport utility vehicle at Mile Marker 99.
According to the report, deputies effected a traffic stop and the woman, identified as 35-year-old Nidia De Leon Rivera, was taken into custody.
“It is important that we all work together,” Frio County Lt. Joshua Longoria said of the multi-county effort. “We will continue to fight crime whether it be narcotics or smuggling.”
