Rene Sobrevilla has been promoted by La Salle County Sheriff Anthony Zertuche to serve as the county’s new undersheriff, a position from which he will assume the role of sheriff when the elected officeholder is not available. Sobrevilla’s duties will include overseeing the administration of the La Salle County Jail, criminal investigations, and some aspects of the agency’s internal administration. The new undersheriff is a Cotulla native and graduated from the police academy at Southwest Texas Junior College in 2004. He has undertaken specialized training in criminal investigation and jail administration and has served as a correctional officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and as training lieutenant at the Frio County Jail. He joined the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office as a reserve deputy in 2005 at the same time as he was serving as assistant chief of the Cotulla Volunteer Fire Department. After a stint as a mechanic in the energy industry, Sobrevilla returned to the sheriff’s office as a fulltime employee, as administrative deputy and, from April 2021 onwards, in the criminal investigations office with Sgt. Investigator Esmeralda Gonzalez and Investigator Homar Olivarez. He said this week that he looks forward to serving his community by helping Sheriff Zertuche in the operation of the law enforcement agency and in improving efficiency and effectiveness of the sheriff’s office throughout the county.
