A man who had been arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges and remanded into custody in Cotulla may have attempted suicide while being held in the La Salle County Jail, according to a report from the sheriff’s office.
In a brief prepared statement Tuesday, Sept. 14, Sheriff Anthony Zertuche wrote that his office has begun examining a suicide attempt that may have occurred at the county jail, and that preliminary investigations have indicated an inmate required transport to Frio Regional Hospital in Pearsall.
Public records indicate Antonio Garza III, 40, of Cotulla, had been taken into custody shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, August 28, on a third-degree felony charge of assault upon a family or household member by impeding breath or circulation, and on a Class A misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury to a family member. The arresting officer was Deputy Ricardo Valdez.
Sheriff Zertuche reported that Garza was transferred from the hospital in Pearsall to a San Antonio hospital until he was bonded out of La Salle County custody by his family on Monday, Sept. 6.
Garza was not in La Salle County custody when he died on Thursday, Sept. 9.
“The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office extends its sincere condolences to the entire family of Antonio Garza, who was a lifelong resident of Cotulla,” the sheriff wrote in his statement.
Sheriff Zertuche has declined to make any further statements related to the case.
