HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Pearsall was 14 out of 54 schools in attendance while the Lady Mavs were 16th of 59 teams at the always heavily attended Islander Splash Invitational Cross Country Meet in Corpus Christi on Saturday, September 18.
The event, held on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi saw high school teams compete in four girls’ divisions and four boys’ fields.
Pearsall competed in a boys’ division that had 330 runners while 334 athletes were entered in the girls’ division.
“We did very well and were led by Zaine [Leal] and Ebony [Garza], with Tayla [Elizondo] also having a great showing,” PHS Head Coach John Hernandez said. “We’re doing some big things here at Pearsall cross country.”
Leal was 14th overall in the small/medium school division, clocking in with a time of 18:33.87.
Matthew Frazier was 87th, CJ Garza was 103rd, Romeo Vega finished 125th, Jaiden Ortiz was 162nd and Tristan Ellis was 226th for Pearsall.
Garza paced the Lady Mavs as she was 57th overall with a time of 14:25.65. Elizondo finished 76th at 14:42.46 and Layla Torres was 97th with a time of 15:01.55.
Also placing for Pearsall were Saynika Weaver, 136th, Makayla Smart, 143rd, Natalie Vega, 187th, Giselle Castillo, 220th and Tori Vega, 262nd.
Pearsall’s cross country teams will return to action this week as they head for the Hill Country to participate in the Comfort Cross Country Meet on Saturday, September 25.
The team will then be at Poth the following week before regionals.
