HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
Despite being shorthanded by several runners, the Pearsall Lady Mavs finished second overall at the third annual Naabours Oktoberfest Cross Country Invitational in Comfort last Saturday.
Ebony Garza was first overall in the girls’ division while Zaine Leal led the Mavs by taking eighth in the boys’ field.
Pearsall’s Mavericks were fifth overall in a field of 18 teams at the event.
“We were a bit shorthanded this weekend but still pulled together and all placed very well,” PHS Head Coach John Hernandez said. “The Mavericks, led by Zaine, also had very good showings. Zaine and Ebony [Garza] continue to pace their teams as they head into our last meet in Poth.
“I’m excited to see how we do in district.”
San Antonio Christian edged the Lady Mavs by only three points for first place. Hondo finished a distant third in the standings.
Garza won the overall girls’ division with a first place finish of 13:15. Pearsall had four runners crack the top 15 and six runners in the top 25. Tayla Elizondo was ninth at 14:02 while Layla Torres finished 12th with a time of 14:42. Saynika Weaver was 14th at 14:49, Natalie Vega came in 18th at 15:01 and Tori Vega placed 20th with a time of 15:44.
Leal paced the Mavericks as he was eighth with a time of 17:45. CJ Garza was 30th at 19:53 and Matthew Frazier came in 31st with a time of 19:57.
Romeo Vega placed 33rd and clocked in at 20:10 while Dylan Ortiz was 39th at 20:50 and Jayden Ortiz finished 49th with a time of 22:33.
In the junior varsity division, Jonathan Viesca was seventh overall at 21:42 and Jevan Torres was ninth at 21:52 in the JV boys’ field.
Tori Ortiz placed fourth overall for the JV girls with a time of 16:23. Samara Ruiz was 12th at 17:35 and Sol Selvera came in 15th with a time of 18:14.
Pearsall will see its final action of the season on Saturday, October 2 at Poth. The Region IV cross country championships are scheduled for October 25 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
