DISTRICT 30-4 A CROSS COUNTRY MEET
Lady Mavs capture 30-4A crown, Mavs second at district meet in Uvalde.
Pearsall nearly pulled off a clean sweep of the district cross country titles as the Lady Mavs won the 30-4A crown at Uvalde last week and the Mavs were narrow runners-up at the event on Wednesday, October 13.
Ebony Garza and Zaine Leal were both district runners-up individually as both crossed the finish lines in second place overall.
The Lady Mavs cruised to their title, racking up 35 points to second place Carrizo Springs’ 47 points.
Pearsall’s Mav came in just behind district champion Hondo. The Owls scored 47 points and Pearsall was six points behind with 53 points.
“The girls knew their chances of being district champions, they knew what they up against and overcame it,” PHS Head Cross Country Coach John Hernandez said. “They worked together and claimed their district championship.
“I knew that we had a great chance of winning the title. We’re senior loaded on the girls side and these girls have been in cross country since they were in the seventh grade. All the years of hard work and dedication paid off.”
Hernandez credited Leal’s senior leadership for the team’s efforts in coming in second in their division.
“Zaine has always motivated our team and wanted the boys to qualify,” he said. “He told the guys before the race to give their best effort so they could all qualify.
“They rest of the boys didn’t let him down and all ran their best races and qualified. The boys haven’t had a team earn a regional berth in over ten years.”
The regional meet is scheduled for Monday, October 25 on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The top three teams and top ten individuals from district qualify for the regional meet. The top four teams and top ten individuals not on a qualifying team at regionals qualify for the UIL state meet.
