CLASS 4A BI-DISTRICT VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS
Pearsall rallies from two games down, falls in fifth game tiebreaker to YWLA.
Pearsall rallied from a two-game deficit to force a fifth and deciding contest before ultimately falling to the Young Women’s Leadership Academy Cardinals in a thrilling bi-district playoff contest Monday evening in Devine.
Each of the five games was hotly contested with each team going on scoring runs and back-and-forth action and long rallies throughout.
YWLA ultimately pulled out the win, claiming a 25-22, 25-21, 16-25, 21-25, 16-14 victory.
“I am extremely proud of all the girls on the team,” PHS Head Coach Erica Tellez said after the loss. “They have worked hard since the start of the season, they adjusted to a new coaching staff and new teammates.
“Although we didn’t come out with the results that we wanted,” she said. “All I could ever ask from the girls is for them to fight until the end, and that is exactly what they did at last night’s game.”
Pearsall jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first game before YWLA came back and eventually chipped away and tied it up at 18-18. They then outscored Pearsall 7-4 down the stretch to steal the 25-22 win.
In the second game, Pearsall trailed early but came back to take a 13-12 lead but YWLA scored four straight points to grab a 16-13 advantage. Trailing 20-19, Pearsall was outscored 5-2 down the stretch as the Cardinals used late momentum to win another game.
Behind two games to none, Pearsall responded with a resounding 25-16 win in the third contest.
After going down 3-0 early, the Lady Mavs went on a 14-5 run to go up 14-8. Pearsall would extend the lead to 21-11 before YWLA battled back with a 5-2 run to make it 23-16. Pearsall won the next two points to take the win.
The fourth outing was another that saw each team make a series of runs. YWLA jumped out to a 10-7 lead only to see Pearsall roar back to grab a 21-14 advantage. The Cardinals cut it to 22-20 but Pearsall scored three of the next four points to secure the win and tie the contest up at two games apiece.
Neither team gave in in the fifth and deciding game. YWLA stormed out to an 8-5 lead only to see Pearsall bounce back to grab an 11-8 advantage.
With Pearsall holding a narrow 13-11 lead, YWLA tied it up at 13-13. The Lady Mavs again went up 14-13 before the Cardinals scored the final three points to top Pearsall in heartbreaking fashion.
YWLA will move to the area round and take on the Rio Hondo and Robstown winner.
