DISTRICT 14-3A, DIVISION I
Cotulla rallied from a 14-point deficit to knock off Lytle and win its second game of the season in a narrow 29-23 decision over the Pirates last Friday at Walter Joyce Stadium.
“It felt good to end the losing streak and end the year on a positive note with the win,” CHS AD and Head Football Coach Marcus Booker said. “It was great for our seniors, they had a lot of things to deal with other than football this year, but it was great to finish with a win.
“Offensively, Hilberto (Soto) played a great game along with Jesse (Sanchez) and Thallan (Olivarri). Thallan really played a great game despite being double teamed all night.
“Defensively, Michael Flores, Jeremiah Alvarez and Alex Medina all played very well for us,” Booker added.
The Pirates raced to a 14-0 first quarter lead and then led 20-7 in the second as they took a 20-14 lead at the half. Hilberto Soto connected twice with Thallan Olivarri in the second, first on a 15-yard strike. Cotulla then added a second score just before the half as Soto found Olivarri from 11 yards out.
Jesse Sanchez then broke off a six-yard touchdown run early in the third as Cotulla took its first lead of the night at 21-20.
Lytle would add a field goal with about five minutes left in the third as the Pirates regained a 23-21 advantage.
The score would hold through much of the fourth until Sanchez capped a Cowboys drive with a six-yard touchdown run with about two minutes left to play. Soto then went in on the two-point conversion attempt as Cotulla grabbed a six-point 29-23 lead.
The Cowboys closed out their season at 2-8 overall and 1-5 and sixth place in District 14-3A, Division I.
