HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Mavericks roll in second half to top Dilley 71-57 in basketball season opener.
Pearsall led by as many as 18 points as they broke away in the second half to claim a 71-57 non-district win over Dilley in the basketball season opener for both teams last Friday.
Marco Camacho scored 19 points while David ‘Bear’ Rendon added 16 points for the Mavericks.
Pearsall was third in District 30-4A a year ago and lost a six-point bi-district decision to San Antonio YMLA.
The team returns a strong nucleus of players and should be in the mix for another playoff berth.
“We came out looking good for our first game,” PHS Head Coach John Hernandez said. “There is area for improvement, as always. I look forward to this season with this young group.”
Joey Ramirez added 12 points for Pearsall while Leon Martinez finished with 11 points and freshman Xaiver Rendon tallied seven points.
Pearsall jumped out early and quickly took an 11-2 lead. The Mavericks were in control throughout but the Wolves made runs in the second to close the gap. Pearsall held a 20-10 lead in the second when the Wolves stormed back and cut it to two at 25-23 following a 13-5 run.
The Mavs then made a run of their own to close the half as they outscored Dilley 9-2 down the stretch to grab a 34-25 halftime lead.
Another exchange of runs in the third would see Dilley cut the margin to six points before the Mavs closed out the stanza to push the lead to 11 at 56-45 after three periods.
Pearsall would lead by as many as 18 points in the fourth at 66-48 as they rolled to the 14-point victory.
“We played better than expected considering the fact that we were missing players due to injuries,” DHS Head Coach Terrance Whadley said. “Pearsall had the height advantage and was able to dominate the boards all night long.
“We also had players get into foul trouble early and that hurt us in the long run.”
Dilley’s Vicente Cantu led all scorers with 23 points while Seth Cano added ten points. Santi Reyna finished with seven points while Deuce Cano added five points on the night.
In sub-varsity action, the Dilley Wolves junior varsity team won a thrilling 54-51 overtime decision while the freshmen team won 19-18.
Dilley hosted Devine Tuesday evening and will play host to its annual tournament this weekend. Pearsall will be in action on Friday, November 19 at Cotulla.
