Lifelong Mavericks’ fan, game volunteer…
The Pearsall community is mourning a beloved school district employee this week after the 43-year-old man died in a car accident Saturday morning.
According to a report on the case, Eliseo Martinez suffered a seizure while driving and lost control of his sedan, causing the vehicle to collide with a tree on Margo Drive shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday.
Martinez was an avid Pearsall Mavericks basketball fan and had been on his way to Poteet to watch the boys’ basketball tournament.
“Eli was a true supporter of the boys’ basketball team,” Pearsall Junior High nurse Flower Camacho said. “The boys played Saturday with a heavy heart.”
Camacho said Martinez followed the boys throughout their summers as they played in league tournaments and always had Gatorade prepared for them. She noted distance to the games was not an issue for Martinez, noting that he once drove to Corpus Christi for a tournament and volunteered to work the time clock.
Martinez was employed with Pearsall ISD for 19 years as a paraprofessional and volunteered much of his time to the athletic program.
“He was a life-long resident of Pearsall,” PISD Superintendent Nobert Rodriguez said in an email on Monday. “He was actually one of my former students, whom I taught in 1990.”
The district implemented a plan for responding to the tragic event and is focusing on helping the students and their families return to regular learning and everyday activities by offering on-site counseling services.
Martinez leaves behind a son, Aiden.
