DISTRICT 27-3A BASKETBALL
Cotulla has dropped five of six outings in District 27-3A action following a 9-1 start to the season and are currently two games out of the playoff race.
The Cowgirls opened league play with a pair of wins over Dilley and San Antonio West Campus but have since lost five of six to drop in the standings.
The team’s only win in that span was a decision over Poteet. Four of the losses were by narrow margins to team’s ahead of them in the standings. Prior to the Christmas break, Cotulla fell 57-52 to 7-1 Karnes City, 39-32 to Natalia (3-4) and 38-30 to Jourdanton (5-3).
Poth, Lytle and Karnes City sit atop the standings with identical 7-1 marks. Jourdanton is in the fourth and final playoff spot at 5-3 while Natalia has one fewer loss than Cotulla at 3-4.
In a win on December 14, the Badgers used a strong first period to outlast the Cowgirls in the narrow five-point win.
Single-digit losses to Natalia and Jourdanton put the Cowgirls at 2-3 overall in the 27-3A standings. A 31-30 win over Poteet saw Cotulla go back to 3-3 in the standings but back-to-back losses to state-ranked Lytle and Poth moved Cotulla to 3-5 in district.
Lytle topped Cotulla 61-35 while Poth recorded a 52-19 victory on January 7.
The Cowgirls were at Dilley on Tuesday evening and will play host to Karnes City this Friday, January 14.
