Mavs close out non-district slate with wins over Bandera, SA Pieper.
In the final non-district outing prior to league play, the Mavericks knocked off Bandera 60-57 on Friday, January 7.
“We played a very tough Bandera team and were able to pull off the victory,” PHS Head Coach John Hernandez said. “I believe playing these really tough teams prior to district will get us ready.”
Pearsall improved to 13-5 overall with the win over the Bulldogs. The team has now won three straight games heading into District 30-4A play on January 14 against Hondo. The team had previously lost five of eight contests after opening the year 7-1.
Marco Camacho paced the team with 14 points, two rebounds and three blocks while freshman Xavier Rendon added 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
David “Bear” Rendon tallied 12 points, six rebounds and a steal while Nicholas Martinez added eight points and three rebounds.
In action on Tuesday, January 4, Pearsall knocked off San Antonio Pieper 58-48.
Pearsall led throughout but held off a second half rally to claim the ten-point victory.
The Mavs jumped out to a 13-9 lead in the first and held a 31-26 halftime advantage. Pieper rallied in the third to take a narrow 43-42 lead into the fourth. There, Pearsall would outscore Pieper 16-5 down the stretch to claim the ten-point victory.
Camacho led the effort with 15 points, eight rebounds and a steal. Julian Baez and Bear Rendon both finished with ten points apiece. Rendon would add seven rebounds, two steals and a block while Baez had two steals, a rebound and one assist.
Xavier Rendon added seven points, seven boards, three assists and three steals.
Joey Ramirez also added six points, four boards and a block.
Pearsall split a pair of contests prior to the Christmas break, knocking off Knippa 81-65 on December 14 before dropping a 65-46 decision to La Vernia on December 21.
The Mavs jumped out to a 27-4 first period lead on the Crushers en route to the 16-point win. Pearsall scored 20 or more points in three of the four periods.
Baez led the team with 17 points while Leon Martinez added 16 points. Bear Rendon added 14 points and Camacho finished with 12 in the win.
In the loss to La Vernia, Rendon paced the team with 11 points while Martinez had eight and Camacho tallied seven points.
Pearsall then took on Fredericksburg and Marble Falls on Wednesday, December 28 in tournament action prior to New Years.
Despite 15 points from Camacho and ten from Joey Ramirez, the Mavs fell 59-52 to the Battlin’ Billies in the opener. Leon Martinez also had eight points.
Pearsall then crushed the Mustangs 76-56 behind 19 points from Leon Martinez. Baez added 18 points and Camacho had 15 in the win. Bear Rendon also tallied 12 points for the Mavs.
Pearsall opens District 30-4A play at home against Hondo on Friday, January 14. Pearsall will then be at Carrizo Springs on January 18.
