Robert Sanchez III of Cotulla was awarded the grand championship for his steer at the La Salle County Junior Livestock Show Friday, March 11, and sold the 1,317-lb. animal the following day at auction for $9,000.
The top-ranked steer was bought by the John Northcut Ranches.
Sanchez also earned grand champion honors for his heifer, which did not go to auction.
Reserve champion honors went to Jade Lozano for her 1,256-lb. steer, which sold at auction for $8,000 to Patricia and Kevin Davis.
Saturday’s public sale included buyers of each of the ranking animals at the livestock show, although only the grand and reserve champions in each category were exhibited on stage during the afternoon bidding.
The commercial heifers grand championship was awarded to Brooklyn Kuenstler, who sold three animals for $4,000 each to Harold and Linda Kuenstler. The reserve championship went to Maggie Alba’s commercial heifers, with a sale of $3,000 for each of three exhibits to Jeremy and Melissa Peters.
Dannika Walker exhibited the grand champion goat, which sold at auction for $7,000 to Lewis Energy. The reserve champion was exhibited by Carlos Ayala and sold for $7,000 to Whitwell Ranches.
Walker also exhibited the grand champion hog, but regulations prohibiting multiple sales prevented her from taking the animal to auction. The reserve championship went to Hailey Gonzales’ hog, which sold for $7,000 to Sean Morgan Hynds.
Reserve championship in broiler chickens was awarded to Abby Menke, who sold the pen of three to Carolyn Morgan for $8,000. Douglas Ramirez exhibited the reserve champion broilers and sold them at auction for $4,000 to Ranch Equipment & Hardware.
Showmanship awards were also presented on Saturday, with buckles being presented to each of the grand and reserve champion exhibitors as well as to those being honored for their work in preparing and presenting livestock projects as well as trades in metal and woodwork, and for exemplifying leadership and the values of the 4H and FFA organizations.
Buckles for championship and showmanship were awarded to Abby Menke, Dannika Walker, Hailey Gonzales, Carlos Ayala, Robert Sanchez, Jackie Alba, Douglas Ramirez, Jade Lozano, Ryan Sanchez, Brooklyn Kuenstler, Maggie Alba, Mike Borrego (grand champion, metalwork), Bailey Walker, and Jeremia Gonzalez (reserve champion, workshop).
