Nine candidates, $65M on ballots
Elections will be held Saturday, May 7, for school board trustees in Pearsall and Cotulla, and voters are being asked to approve a $65 million bond for facility construction, buses and other improvements.
Candidates have filed for re-election in three out of four races across both counties, and two candidates are vying for a seat that will be vacated.
At Pearsall ISD, Place 5 School Trustee Tomas “Tommy” Navarro is seeking re-election and is being challenged by Jorge Cabasos. In Place 6, incumbent Eric G. Fletcher is seeking another term but faces challenges from candidates Eulogio “Logie” Rodriguez and Matthew Aguilar.
At Cotulla ISD, current Place 6 Trustee Raquel Yanez has decided not to seek another term in office and leaves the table in May. Candidates Rosario “Ros” Morales and Crystal V. Sanchez have filed for election to the seat. In Place 7, incumbent Trustee Jamie L. Whitwell is being challenged in her re-election bid by write-in candidate Alfredo Zamora Jr.
All of this year’s school board elections are for three-year terms.
Voters in Cotulla ISD are also being asked to decide whether the district may go out for a maximum of $65 million in school building bonds. If approved, the funds will go towards a number of projects, including construction of a new high school, improvements to several other school buildings, additions to the CISD bus fleet, technology, fixtures and fittings for other campuses, as well as a new Ag Science building and trades workshop, and a larger auditorium.
Early voting in the school board elections will be possible 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, April 25 to May 3 at school district central offices. Polling stations will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on election day.
Dilley ISD holds its trustee elections in November.
