Bella Linares, named Best Overall Female Vocalist,
middle school division, at Southside contest
Student members of the Cotulla ISD’s mariachi bands have returned with trophies for their performances at the state competition, the high schoolers having captured the Class 3A state championship.
Mariachi bands representing Cotulla High School and Cotulla’s Frank Newman Middle School traveled to Southside High School on the outskirts of San Antonio on Saturday, March 26, for the third annual state competition.
The event was judged by the Texas Mariachi Band Directors’ Association. Cotulla’s band had qualified for the state contest by earning top marks at contests earlier in the academic year.
The CHS Mariachi Cotuleno performed “El Tirador,” “Flor Sin Retoño,” and “Potpurri Vicente Fernandez II” for judges to earn the highest marks in Class 3A.
CHS Mariachi Band members are Esteban Alba Jr., Alexandra Alcocer, Marko Cantu, Isaac Cerda, Demetrius Del Real, Jasmyn Galvan, Devon Garcia, Jesus Garza, Lillian Gonzalez, Marina Hernandez, Jaden Linares, Charles Mann, Viviana Nieto, Mariah Roath, Jadrian Rodriguez, Isaiah Saldivar, Jada Teneyuca, and Diego Torres.
The Newman Middle School Mariachi Band performed “La Tortuga Verde,” “Crei,” and “Hasta Que Te Conoci” for judges in their first ever contest appearance for the state title and earned second place.
Also awarded to Cotulla this year was the Best Overall Female Vocalist title in the Middle School Division, which went to Bella Linares.
The NMS Mariachi Band includes Hayden Ayala, Kaylie Carrizales, Alejandro Coronado, Davyn Del Toro, Noah Ferdin, Alessandra Garcia, Randi Garcia, Kaydin Garza, Elijah Gonzales, Nayeli Gonzales, Paul Gonzalez, Martin Gonzalez Jr., James Hinojosa, Bella Linares, Madison Luna, Arelie Ramirez, Erynn Ramirez, Roland Ramirez, Victoria Rodriguez-Flores, and Ryan Sanchez.
Cotulla’s mariachi bands are under the direction of Francisco C. Ramirez Jr. and Elio Ramirez Jr.
