A new temporary fruit and vegetable dollar amount increase is available through the end of September by Texas WIC.
The extension has different dollar amounts based on client categories. Eligible clients will receive the following:
Children get $24 each month; pregnant, postpartum and some breastfeeding clients get $43 each month; and fully and partially breastfeeding clients receive $47 each month. Fully breastfeeding women of multiple children will receive $70.50.
For example, clients who are pregnant and have two children (ages 1-5) who are receiving WIC, will receive $91, ($43 mom + $24 child + $24 child = $91) each month in April, May and June to buy fruit and vegetables.
The new amount will be on the client shopping list under benefit amount. Anyone who already has benefits on their card for April, May or June, should contact a local WIC office for a time to update benefits.
In October, the benefit amount will return to $11 for pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women and $9 for children one to five years old.
The fruit and vegetable benefit can be used to buy fruits and vegetables in the following forms: fresh, frozen, cans, glass jars and plastic containers. Clients can choose organic or regular, single or mixed items in any package size.
